Baggu: Reusable Bags

Starting October 1st, San Francisco’s checkout bag ordinance will go into effect. Under this law, retailers will be required to switch from plastic to paper bags (compostable is alright too), and customers who do not bring their own bags will be charged $0.10 for each bag provided by the retailer.  Around the country, many other cities are adopting this same movement towards going green. If this is happening in your city (or if you just want to be more green), I recommend Baggu bags for your grocery/Target runs. Those boat-sized bags that they used to sell for $1.99 at Costco were awesome too, but I haven’t seen them at my local Costco for awhile. I like Baggu over other brands that I’ve tried because (1) the shorter handle allows me to carry the groceries with my hands vs my shoulders – and that seems more like a manly way to carry groceries to me, (2) the gussets along the bottom allow easy carry of milk/eggs, (3) they are extremely durable and holds up to 50lbs, and (4) they fold neatly into a flat square – which means they will fit nicely into a back pocket.

You can buy them online at the Baggu site (link below) or you can email them for a list of local vendors in your area. Regular sized Baggus are $9/ea (or 3+ for $8.50/ea; 6+ for $7.50/ea). Big Baggus (and these are HUGE) are $12/ea.

Mr. Porter: Accessories Wish List

I’m pretty excited about the new accessories that have arrived at Mr. Porter’s this week.  [1] The tortoise shell detail with the universally flattering aviator sunglasses from Gucci are on the top of my wish list.  [2]Batting away a persistent fly at the dinner table is possibly the most annoying thing in the world, but when they are made into cufflinks, as Paul Smith has done, I suddenly find them quite amusing. [3] I love the velvet bow tie from Lavin, which immediately brings to mind the bow tie I loved so much here. I definitely want to stock up on one of these for the winter. [4] I’m not how many heart-shaped things I would wear as a guy (except CdG), but I do quite like these socks from Acne. The pattern is small enough to not make a scene at work, but if I wanted to do a little showing off, I could easily lift up a pant leg too.

Hmm..and I’m thinking that all 4 of these accessories could look rather nicely together too.

New Era Japan: Snake Visor Snapback Cap

My allegiance lies with the Atlanta Braves, but New Era Japan has me wanting to sport this cap! The series consists of 4 different caps, but the one pictured above is my absolute favorite. The navy cap features a (fake) snake-leather on its visor, button, and back strap – giving Yankee fans the option of being fashionably cool while supporting their favorite team.

Monocle + Delavux: Newspaper Bag

I’d like to think of myself as being the type of man who would ride public transportation on my way to and from work, coffee in hand (do they allow drinks on the train?), enjoying the daily edition of the WSJ. Of course the traditional fold & tuck away newsprint have been largely replaced by the ever so convenient iPad and other iProducts, but there is hope that I would be a traditionalist in this sense. The Newspaper Bag collabo between Monocle + Delavux would be a beautiful addition to that morning commute. I love the woven leather material used all over the bag (Toile de Cuir) – gives it that nice vintage appeal. Not cheap at $2800, but definitely fabulous.

ASOS: New Arrival Highlights

ASOS is one of my favorite places to shop. The site is full of goodies – and their no minimum, 2-way free shipping policy is so sweet (and dangerous on the wallet). I took a quick browse through their latest arrivals and immediately spotted some must-haves. Everyone is playing with pocket details it seems. The Pocket T-shirt by Reclaimed Vintage (top left) is trendy without feeling forced – the Aztec print on the pocket is a winner for me. The People’s Market Slim Chinos (top right) has a nice slim fit silhouette and is available in my new favorite menswear color – purple/plum. Fitting right into my obsession with bracelets, the ASOS Brass Skull and Leather Bracelet (bottom left) is a total steal at less than $15 for the entire pack! Last but not least, I think the Oxford Short Sleeve Shirt by The Quiet Life (bottom right) will be a good and easy alternative to the popular chambray shirts that I love.

Oki-Ni: New Arrival Highlights

Red must be on my mind because of the 4 items I favorited from Oki-Ni’s latest arrivals, 3 of them happen to contain red or a hint of red. I love the square-fronted collar detail on the Marc Jacobs T (top left). The red/white stripes are a nice alternative to my usual navy/white striped favorites. The Uniform Wares 200 Series watch (top right) is everything I want a watch to be – it even has a discrete date display! The Hybrid Rec Sneakers by Common Projects (bottom left) is a mash up of the Derby shoe with a sneaker sole – casual luxury goes a long way. And finally, given my current obsession with cool stacked bracelets, the M. Cohen 4 Wrap Sterling Silver Waxed Cord (bottom right) is a perfect addition to my decorated wrist.

Topo Designs: Hip Pack

I discovered Topo Designs recently when I was googling for kick ass outdoors gear. I always try to bring a little bit of personal style in everything I wear and own. Not always the easiest when it comes to performance wear and other nature-appropriate accessories, but it is possible! I am just fanatical about everything by Topo Designs – these guys really have an eye for cool. All of their bags will fit in just as comfortably in the concrete jungle too.  Their newest design is called the Hip Pack, and I really want one for short day trips and weekend hikes. Featuring 1000d Cordura for the exterior and a 420d water-resistant pack cloth for the inner liner, my favorite part of this pack are the leather lash tabs. You can use them to hold a thin jacket (pictured above) or attach a bike light (!!!) for those urban dwellers who want to be safe on the road. Cool and functional – it really doesn’t get better than that.

Bell & Ross: WW1 Heure Sautante

These watches had my heart ticking! French watchmaker, Bell & Ross, has brought together a successful marriage of classic and minimalism in such a beautiful way. I love every detail of these 2 limited edition time pieces! I favor the rose gold/brown leather combination, but the platinum/gray leather pairing is quite unique and memorable as well. Plus, I feel that the platinum version has a slightly cooler dial face. I already love the look of the casual, rolled-up sleeve on guys – but if I owned one of these beauties, I would definitely never want to wear an unrolled sleeve again.

Herschel Supply Co.: Walton Duffle Bag

I’m always on the outlook for a great overnight bag. I like bags that are durable without excess weight, functional, roomy, and of course, stylish. The Walton duffle from Herschel Supply Co. fits the bill, and it even has a side zip compartment for shoes! This is a feature that I simply love in the duffle bag I use currently by Nike (link here –  it’s for girls, but unless you get the pink version no one will really know). The Walton is offered in a variety of colors, including solids, but the two-toned versions get extra style points. The only thing I’ll need now is a weekend trip.

SwitchEasy: Avant-garde Series iPhone 4/4S Sculptured Cases

I am pretty thrilled with the rabito case that I have now, but man, I would give it up in a second to own one of these amazing sculptured cases from SwitchEasy. There are 4 designs total in this series with 3 colors for each design. My favorites are featured above (Chateau on left, Blossom on right). They have more manly options as well, but by far, the two above are the most intricate and interesting, in my opinion. These would make a great gift for your special someone! For $34.99, they are not the cheapest case, but SwitchEasy is including 2 anti-static screen guards, a microfiber wipe, 2 headphone jack protectors, and loads of other goodies for free. Pretty good deal for a pretty fantastic case.
